People based on numbers.

March 12, 2009 by

We do people always have to be graded and viewd by their numbers? Numbers such as GPA, weight, height, the amount of money one owns, how many times one has gone out with a girl, etc. From the day I moved to Korea, I found out that people here only care about their grades…I mean come on. GPA determine whether you are going to go to a good college or not, and after all, the only reason why one wants to go to a good college is, again, because they want to make money to impress who? Them selves and to the public who will be jealous towards them. Even the companies decide whether to hire a person based on their academic skills and how “good” of a person they are, based only off of one’s graes. People sometimes care too much about the “amount” instead of the “value.” Additionally, to make another statement, arent schools and colleges there to teach one how to live instead of how to make money? I have always wondered that because people around me are really competitive towards getting into a good school and succeeding in life. I currently have a GPA that is under 3 and I’m honestly not embarrassed because I love my life. I care about getting good grades and trying hard (seriously) , but sometimes people forget that they are living for now and not for the future. I mean think about it! If you live for the future, in the future, your going to live for the further futuer and will never be able to find joy in their life! All I am trying to say is that the society is becmoing a mess right now and one of the reason is because of economy. People want to make money so much that they study too hard in their highschool year to get their GPA (number) up to get into a good college, and when they actually do succeed, they look back and see that they have wasted their time. Honestly, just because I have a low GPA, doesnt’t make me a total idiot that cant think and decide based on my intelligence. You only get one life……..think about it….We study so hard that we start to bleed from our nose, succeed, and what next? or is making money really succeeding? Because my dream is to marry the woman that I fall in love with, have a couple of children, live in an average house, and make enough money to live through my family’s and my life. If we struggle, we struggle as a family, and if we are happy, share the happiness with my family…..isnt that real happiness? Is that really not enough?

Andrew you make a good point – I also get disappointed because judgments are often made based on numbers…

Your post mentioned a few different examples from money, height, weight, GPA, girls, etc – but the majority of the post seemed to relate mostly on GPA and money.

I agree with that a lot, and most of us study hard to maintain a good GPA, so that we’ll go to a good college and find a job, make money.

But… one thing that I have to strongly disagree with your post is that people, or students, do not always try to maintain a good GPA only for money. The school also never said they’ll teach us how to make money. We all have our dreams – say a kid wants to become a successful journalist because he thinks writing and media is influential to people. To become famous and actually have a good impact when he becomes a journalist, he needs to study hard in school, so that he gets best possible education in college. You can’t expect yourself to become a good writer when you just slack off and go clubbing all day….

So in conclusion, if you think you will find a purpose in life with a low GPA, that’s all that matters. But if the purpose can only be met with a better GPA, then you better get to studying.. Everyone wants money – who doesn’t? But I have to say people are not always basing everything on numbers, or say money in particular.. People don’t need money to be respected, or look good.

Q: ” You only get one life……..think about it….We study so hard that we start to bleed from our nose, succeed, and what next? ”
A: What’s next is you earned what you worked for… Whether it’s money or not.

Yo~ Daniel~~ thanks for the meaningful comment! ^_^
I think you have a great point. But again, I will like to point out some of my own opinions. You mentioned about dreams and how you dont always need money, but think about it! to achieve your dream, what does that mean? It means you make good money out of it while enjoying what you are doing! Plus you study hard to make your dream come true lol you study hard because, afterall, you can’t achieve your goal if you have a low GPA T.T isnt that true? anyways, I love your point of view too! I think there are no right answer to this subject ! but very well organized.
